In the early 1990s, Pakistan was going through a time of rapid change. The politics and demographics of the Islamic Republic were shifting, and with it came new challenges for the Christian community. Many Islamic Dawah organizations began targeting Christians with doctrinal arguments, sowing confusion about the faith. They also extended welfare to the poor Christians, using aid as a tool to convert vulnerable Christians to Islam. At this critical point—when the Church stood at one of its weakest moments—many believers wavered, and some even abandoned their faith.
But in the midst of this crisis, God raised a young man: Rev. Shafique Kanwal, a Presbyter in the Karachi Diocese of the Church of Pakistan. With a heart for his people and a vision for the Church, he stepped forward to face the challenge. Alongside him was his wife, Ghazala Shafique, who would later become one of Pakistan’s most recognised human rights activists and the nation’s first female apologist. Together, they began to teach Christian Apologetics and Missions to students, pastors, and church leaders—equipping them to defend the truth of the Gospel and to share it boldly with Muslims through genuine, respectful dialogue.
Their ministry soon bore fruit. Many who learned under them became apologists themselves, carrying forward the same mission of evangelism. Rev. Shafique and Ghazala also reached out to Christians who had converted to Islam, walking alongside them with grace and truth, and by God’s mercy, many were restored to the faith. What began as a small effort quickly grew into a nationwide movement.
Over the past three decades, the Lord has multiplied their work beyond what anyone could have imagined. From the 1990s to 2025, more than 1,200 Muslims have come to Christ through this mission, including some well-known figures. The vision expanded further: as Muslim Background Believers (MBBs) grew in number, so did the need for safe spaces. Recognising this, we established four shelters across Pakistan to protect those in extreme danger for their newfound faith. Alongside this, we began offering legal aid for persecuted Christians, including victims of blasphemy charges, forced religious conversions, and underage marriages.
What started with one couple’s obedience has grown into a mission that continues to impact lives across Pakistan. Today, our commitment remains the same: to equip the Church for authentic apologetics, strong and genuine evangelism, and faithful witness to Christ, no matter the cost.
